Corporate America: Freedom's Greatest Threat

Corporate America: Freedom's Greatest Threat By Chuck Baldwin July 27, 2007 This column is archived at http://www.chuckbaldwinlive.com/c2007/cbarchive_20070727.html Most of us who believe in the free enterprise system have been taught that business interests normally work to the betterment of America's overall health, both commercially and politically. While there might have been a time when this was true, it is definitely not true today. Not only has Big Business become unfriendly to the principles of freedom, it has also become freedom's greatest threat. To say that Corporate America is America's greatest threat is a harsh accusation, but one that I believe is warranted. I will even be so bold as to say that freedom has much more to fear from today's Chambers of Commerce than it does from Al Qaida. Today's Americans need to carefully heed the sage counsel of Thomas Jefferson, who said, "Merchants have no country. The mere spot they stand on does not constitute so strong an attachment as that from which they draw their gains." The truth of that statement aptly explains the serious damage that Big Business is currently inflicting upon our liberties. Someone rightly observed that one can determine the focus of, and influence upon, societies by analyzing its architecture. For example, from the founding of Jamestown in 1607 through the beginning of the War for Southern Independence, the most notable buildings (in most communities) belonged to churches. From the mid-nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century, the most prominent buildings belonged to various governments. From the mid-twentieth century to the present, the biggest, most lavish, and most notable buildings belong to Big Business. This is not accidental or coincidental. These buildings are the monuments of men to the ideas that mean the most to them. Accordingly, a vast number of today's Americans have come to worship at the shrine of Big Business. However, this idolatry comes at great price. Not the least of which is the way we have allowed Big Business interests to virtually control governmental policy, including our war and defense policies. For example, I recently obtained a copy of the U.S. Navy's "Playbook." This Playbook succinctly summarizes the Department of the Navy's policies and guidelines, and is made available to naval officers and to public affairs professionals. Under the section entitled "Vision" it states, "Americans secure at home and abroad; sea and air lanes open and free for the peaceful and productive movement of international commerce; enduring national and international naval relationships that remain strong and true; steadily deepening cooperation among the maritime forces of emerging partner nations . . ." Notice the emphasis of "international commerce," "international naval relations," and "emerging partner nations." Under the section entitled "Focus On Execution" it states, "We must continue to embrace the vital contributions that out [sic] partners make in working to secure the global community." Notice that part of our Navy's policy is to "secure the global community." So, who is our military charged to defend? Is it the American people? Is it the "global community," or is it Big Business? Navy brass might answer, "All of the above." However, it should seem obvious to anyone who is paying attention that in the grand scheme of things, the will and interests of the American people are being submerged under the will and interests of Big Business, which is creating the global community. Under the section "Maritime Strategy" it states, "This new Maritime Strategy is required to face the threats of our interdependent societies and global economy." Can the reader not see how that even our military and defense departments are being coerced and manipulated by the interests of Big Business? Need more evidence? Look at Iraq. Are you aware that America has almost as many civilian contractors in Iraq as we do military personnel? According to a recent census report, there are more than 100,000 civilian contractors currently working in Iraq. In fact, the war in Iraq has become "the most privatized war in U.S. history." (Source: Multinational Monitor, Nov/Dec 2006) The Halliburton company alone has received some $20 billion from both its oil and troop logistics contracts. Contracts, that according to MM, include " orty-five dollar cases of soda; $85,000 trucks in need of minor repairs . . . tens of millions of dollars in gasoline surcharges; thousands of meals prepared but never served to the troops . . . [and] contaminated water served to the troops." And if one were to actually believe that America has any intention of pulling out of Iraq, consider this: experts predict that private, civilian contracts will grow into a $200 billion-a-year global business by 2010. Why do you think that our government is currently constructing the biggest U.S. embassy in the world in downtown Baghdad? In fact, when our embassy in Iraq is finished it will be larger than the Vatican! No, my friends, our government has no intentions of pulling out of Iraq. Not next year. Not ever! Why? It is the desire of Big Business that we be there. Consider, too, the way that the Chambers of Commerce around America attempt to facilitate the flow of illegal aliens into our country. In fact, the national Chamber of Commerce is one of the biggest proponents of amnesty for illegal aliens. Many within Corporate America also support "sanctuary cities" for illegal aliens. They lobby our congressmen in Washington, D.C., and in state capitols to NOT enforce our nation's laws against companies that hire illegals and against illegals themselves. Anyone with even a modicum of common sense understands that nothing compromises America's safety and security as does the current invasion of our country by illegal aliens. How anyone can believe that President Bush is serious about fighting a "war on terror" when he has done absolutely nothing for nearly six years to secure our borders and ports is the height of naïveté. As we can easily observe by reading the aforementioned U.S. Navy's own Playbook, this administration is basing its foreign and domestic policies more on the desires of Big Business than the interests of the American people. And lest Democrats think that, should they capture the White House in 2008, things will change, guess again. The same Big Business interests that control the Republican Party control the Democratic Party, which means there will be no significant change to our government's policy regarding Iraq if Democrats are in charge. Count on it! Look, too, at how Big Business tries to manipulate laws regarding the right to keep and bear arms. One of the chief proponents of denying people the right to transport firearms in their vehicles to and from work is Corporate America. All over the country, companies threaten their employees with dismissal should they have firearms in their cars. In fact, it is the diabolical duo of Big Business and Big Government that are the biggest proponents of denying the American people their right to personal self-defense. Speaking of personal self-defense, if you own a firearm and intend to have ammunition to put in that firearm, you might want to buy it while you can afford it. By the first of next year, the price of ammunition will be at least double what it is today, that is providing one can find it at all. The reason? Corporate America is selling the raw ingredients necessary for the construction of ammunition (at top dollar, I might add) to Red China. As with everything else, Corporate America would rather sell to Communist China than to the American people. Another sign of Corporate America's treachery: just last Tuesday (July 24, 2007), Westinghouse Electric Company signed a deal to build four nuclear power plants in China and to transfer technology for its newest reactor to a Chinese partner. According to Westinghouse president, Steve Tritch, the Chinese nuclear plant deal is worth "multibillion-dollar contracts." But the Chinese buyers asked the company not to disclose details. (Source: the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) Just like we will never be told why China is buying up all the raw materials that go into making ammunition. Of course, the marriage of Corporate America with the communist elite in China is now well established. USA Today recently reported that "U.S. corporate profits in China passed $2 billion the first six months of 2006." Companies currently doing business in China include Caterpillar, Starbucks, Greif (a Delaware, Ohio-based maker of industrial packaging), General Motors, Google, UPS, Microsoft, Nike, AT&T, and of course, Wal-Mart. In addition, the Chrysler Corporation recently announced that it will begin importing cars made in China. In fact, the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai represents over 1,300 corporations, including 150 Fortune 500 companies, and the U.S.-China Business Council represents 250 companies doing business all across China. (Source: Multinational Monitor) Plus, we should realize that it is Corporate America that is behind the push to outsource America's jobs and industries. It is also Corporate America that is behind the push to create a NAFTA superhighway and North American Community. In short, it is Corporate America that is behind the push to sacrifice America's national sovereignty and independence. It is also Corporate America that opposes Country Of Origin Labeling (COOL) laws that would require companies to tell consumers where their food comes from. In fact, such a law was passed back in 2002 and signed by President Bush, but Corporate America's lobbyists successfully blocked the implementation of that law. Therefore, you and I still have no idea where the food we purchase comes from. The list just goes on and on. As one can easily see, Corporate America has morphed into an international juggernaut that threatens our safety and security, as well as our liberty and independence in a way that foreign terrorists could only dream about. The American people need to start seeing these giant corporations for what they really are: freedom's greatest threat. Canada's Population is Aging at an Alarming Rate: 2006 Census

Canada's Population is Aging at an Alarming Rate: 2006 Census
Abortion a key factor in the demographic shift

By Elizabeth O'Brien

OTTAWA, ON, July 26, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - According to the most recent 2006 Census, Canada's population is aging rapidly, presenting serious concerns both economically and about the sustainability of the national health system.

Released on July 17 by Statistics Canada, the 2006 Census states that the number of people over age 64 has increased by 11.5% in the last 5 years. Of the total 32,973,546 Canadians, "the number of people aged 55 to 64, many of whom are workers approaching retirement, has never been so high in Canada, at close to 3.7 million in 2006." At the same time, those younger than 15 years old make up only 17.7% of the population, another record-breaking low for Canadians. By 2022 it is predicted that "seniors will outnumber children in every province", and by 2031 the median age will be 44.

At present the Territories have the youngest population in Canada with one in four people being younger than 15. The report states, "The territories' relative 'youth' is attributable to the high fertility rate, particularly among the Inuit population, and lower life expectancy than in the provinces."

The four Atlantic provinces, on the other hand, are the "oldest" provinces in the nation. The census calls this a "sharp contrast" from 50 years ago when Atlantic women were having more children than the rest of the country, and seniors made up only 7.8% of the population. Similarly, in Quebec the number of seniors has more than quadrupled in the past 50 years, and in the entire province, there are only 1.3 million people under the age of 15. Quebec also has one of the highest abortion and contraception rates in the Western World (see http://www.lifesite.net/ldn/2005/oct/05102501.html).

Referring to the recent "large-scale changes in the age distribution" of the population, Statistics Canada Daily notes, "The two main factors behind the population aging are the nation's low fertility rate and increasing life expectancy." At present, the average birth rate is at a low of 1.53 children per woman.

Abortion figures are key to understanding this startling demographic shift. According to the most-recent statistics (2004), the number of abortions is 11.4 for every 1,000 women below the age of 20. There are also 14.6 abortions for every 1,000 women aged 15 to 44, a number which has dropped slightly from 15.1 in 2003. Nevertheless, in 2004 a total of 100,039 babies were aborted in Canada.

Commenting on the number of annual abortions, a Campaign Life Coalition news article stated, "We estimate the total number of babies slaughtered in the womb since abortion on demand was permitted in 1969 to be more than 3 million. That's roughly equivalent to the population of Toronto permanently lost. That's about a million fewer university and college graduates in the workforce and more than 2 million missing elementary, high school and post-secondary students."

The report continued, "The future of our country is literally being destroyed and there is no great public outcry (other than by the pro-life movement) or political will to do anything about the means being used to do so. The magnitude of this atrocity is lost on the average Canadian and I dare say even on most of our religious leaders who still don't seem to comprehend the very high priority and bold actions that should be given to the issue. As Stalin said, 'one death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic.'"

"The historical ratios between young and old would not have been thrown into flux if it were not for abortion, birth control and a materialistic philosophy that favors small families of one or two children (with increasing numbers of couples avoiding children altogether). In fact, the policies of government and many other Canadian institutions have for decades strongly discouraged having more than one or two children."

Studies predict that the rapidly changing demographics within the nation will take a large toll on the economy and burden the health care system. As a result, the situation has become a cause for major concern throughout Canada. The change will also place a heavy burden on the labor force and all taxpayers, who will be forced to support the aging generation. Nevertheless, any proposed solutions continue to avoid the key issues of contraception or abortion (see http://www.lifesite.net/ldn/2007/jun/07061804.html).

Bella-Pro-family and pro-Life

Toronto Film Festival Winner "Bella" Finds Major Distributor, Anticipates Opening October 26

By John Jalsevac

July 26, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Bella, the heart-warming independent film that took the 2006 Toronto Film Festival by storm, winning the prestigious "People's Choice Award," is in final negotiations with a major U.S. distributor, a representative at Metanoia Films told LifeSiteNews.com. *

According to the representative, barring any last minute glitches in the signing of the papers, the film will be released in theatres across the country on October 26 of this year. Currently, however, he said, further details cannot be released until the contract is finalized.

While the team behind Bella is not marketing the work as a strictly pro-life movie, many pro-life and pro-family groups across the country and internationally have embraced the film for its unapologetic celebration of life and the beauty of family and for its honest look at the difficult issue of what to do about an unplanned and "unwanted" pregnancy.

Recently Boston's Cardinal Sean O'Malley plugged the film on his personal blog, saying to his readers, "I recommend the film to all of you because I think that the message is so beautiful."

Much like Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ, this newest film has become something of rallying point for those desiring to see uplifting, moral entertainment come out of Hollywood. And much like The Passion, Bella, from its inception to its current breakthrough finding a major distributor, has been blessed by a host of miracles both large and small that have convinced many that it was "meant to be".

At the same time, major secular film reviewers and the viewing public have welcomed the movie for its refreshing simplicity, high production quality, superb acting and compelling storyline.

The film is the first for lead actor Eduardo Verastegui since a profound conversion that saw him transformed from one of Mexico's hottest television and music stars, known for an immoral lifestyle, to a humble, devout Catholic who now professes that the driving force behind everything he does is his desire to become a saint.

"For me, I was eager to erase the last twelve years of my career, the stereotype of the latin lover," says Verástegui about his role in Bella.

Most of Bella takes place during a single day, and follows lead characters Jose, once a famous athlete, now a chef at his adopted brother's restaurant, and Nina, a young waitress at the restaurant, who finds out near the beginning of the film that she is pregnant. Single, scared, and alone, Nina appears to have decided that her only option is to abort the child, until Jose spends an unusual day with her in New York City. However, the word "abortion" is never mentioned in the movie.

Since taking home the People's Choice Award, the team behind Bella has worked tirelessly promoting the film, gathering grassroots support for the cinematic underdog. The atypical film, which was shot on a shoe-string budget, and in less than 25 days, has captured the hearts of viewers for its intense intimacy and endearing characterization. At a screening that this LifeSiteNews.com writer attended, when the film ended it received a full five minute standing ovation, while many of the audience members were in tears.

The people behind Bella have never shot low, and currently their sights are on the Oscars, where many other films that have won the "People's Choice Award" at the Toronto film festival have gone and won numerous award before, including Best Film.

* The wording of this sentence has been amended from the original. The original stated that Bella had "been picked up" by a major U.S. distributor. The publicist for Bella later clarified to LifeSiteNews.com that it would be more accurate to say that Metanoia Films is in final negotiations with a major U.S. distributor, since the deal has not yet been closed. Papal aide warns of 'Islamisation of Europe'

Papal aide warns of 'Islamisation of Europe'

ALLAN HALL IN BERLIN

THE principal aide to Pope Benedict XVI has issued a stark warning over the danger of the "Islamisation of Europe" .

Monsignor Georg Gaenswein speaks with the full authority of the Catholic Church about a Muslim domination of Europe.

He made it clear that Europe's Christian roots are under threat from a resurgent Islam.

He also spoke of Islam not being a single force but a religion of extremes, with extremists who "turn to rifles for their goals".

His comments come just a year after the newly appointed Pope enraged Muslims worldwide with a speech linking Islam with violence.

It led to churches being burned in the West Bank, a nun being shot dead in a Somalian hospital and the Iranian president accusing him of being in league with the US president, George Bush, to "repeat the Crusades" of old.

But Mgr Gaenswein has defended Pope Benedict's speech, saying it was an attempt by the Pontiff to "act against a certain naivety".

Vatican watchers say this is clearly aimed at western governments who bend over backwards to accommodate Muslims at cost to their own native Christian cultures.

Iraqi Christians experience 'authentic martyrdom,' Pope Benedict says

Iraqi Christians experience 'authentic martyrdom,' Pope Benedict says

By Cindy Wooden
6/21/2007

Catholic News Service

VATICAN CITY (CNS) – The Christians of Iraq are experiencing an "authentic martyrdom" and must be supported materially and spiritually by the entire Catholic Church, Pope Benedict XVI said.

"Peace, so long implored and awaited, unfortunately is still largely being offended," the pope said in a June 21 speech to representatives of the Catholic communities in the Middle East and to Catholic aid agencies that assist them.

In "vast areas" of the Middle East, including Iraq, Lebanon, Israel and the Palestinian territories, "interpersonal and communal relationships" are being compromised by tension, unrest and all-out war, he told participants in a Vatican meeting of church funding agencies for Eastern churches, known by its Italian acronym, ROACO.

"Ancient and new injustices" are being perpetuated in the region, the pope said, leading to new violence and more war.

Pope Benedict said he and all those participating in the meeting wanted to express their solidarity with and closeness to the region's Christian communities and to "those who venerate the name of God and seek him with a sincere conscience."

"I knock at the hearts of those who have specific responsibility that they would adhere to their serious obligation to guarantee the peace of everyone, without distinction, freeing them from the deadly illness of religious, cultural, historical or geographical discrimination," he said.

Pope Benedict offered a special word of support and comfort to Chaldean Patriarch Emmanuel-Karim Delly of Baghdad, who attended the meeting.

The pope again offered his condolences to the patriarch for the June 3 "barbaric murder of an unarmed priest and three subdeacons" in Mosul in northern Iraq.

Pope Benedict said, "The entire church accompanies with affection and admiration all the sons and daughters (of the Chaldean Catholic Church in Iraq) in this hour of authentic martyrdom for the sake of Christ's name."

The pope also encouraged church representatives from Israel and the Palestinian territories "to reinforce the sorely tried hope" of their faithful.

Pope Benedict said the work of ROACO is a necessary witness of the love of the entire church for the Christian communities in the Middle East.

But Christian charity also is an essential part of the Catholic Church's commitment to Christian unity and to interreligious dialogue, he said, adding that charity often is the only way "to stimulate the paths of dialogue and to open unexpected horizons."

The pope prayed that the funding agencies and all Catholics would find ways to demonstrate charity toward all the region's peoples in a way that would also help, and never offend, the region's Catholics.

Poor Children Do Not Deserve Saturdays According To Liberals

Poor Children Do Not Deserve Saturdays According To Liberals.

July 17th, 2007 · No Comments

You remember Friday afternoons when you were a child, the elation of knowing that the next day was SATURDAY the absolute BEST day! 3 O’Clock came and you would literally leap home from school (in the days when you were allowed to leave school before midnight), run in to Mum, (in the days when you were allowed to have a Mum who could stay at home and look after you), get a snack and dump the schoolbags, then run straight out into the street to play, play, play (in the days when you were allowed to play out). Remember that fantastic feeling that you would not have to think about going to school untill at least Sunday night when last minute homework was completed and you finally gave up kidding yourself it was still the weekend.

How could you forget being a child, when these little pleasures of life were the stuff of great happiness. The smell of toast, Mummy, the thought of holidays, Daddy laughing, SATURDAY!

Well a stupid little body of faceless bores has just announced that they want to BAN poor kids from having Saturday altogether. CentreForum, which is described as being a “Liberal think tank” ( the jury is out on whether Liberals can actually think, or feel or do anything human) has come up with the idea that basically because some schools are so bloody awfull that none of the children who go there actually get an education the best thing to do would be to send the children into these schools more often!

The Daily Telegraph (17th July) reported that “poor kids” would be forced to go into school on a Saturday and even during the holidays (click here). Of course it will only be poor kids who are affected by this,  poor kids who are already suffering due to inadequate schooling are to be singled out as idiots and deprived of what may be the only thing left in todays society for children to enjoy. Because the state fails to provide proper schooling for poor children, (this is the state which insists on sticking its nose into everything and believing it can do it best) the answer is to punish those children by making then go to school on a Saturday.

But here’s the bit that will really take you to the fair, the schools where the children are being failed will get paid more money for being useless! Under the “think tank” scheme the “educators” of the poor children will get monetory hand outs to keep the silly rascals who can’t read and write locked up for another day. But wait, it gets better, this money is to be enough to have schools literally fighting to get poor kids enrolled. This is supposed to solve the problem? A load of rubbish schools scrapping over a handout?

NO, NO, NO! Resist! Surely people cannot be so brain dead that they would let this happen? If the state fails the schools and the schools fail the child then it is the State and the School that should be punished, not the child. The whole thing is upside down. Consider, a child should have Saturdays free to roam and play, to be children, in order for Saturdays to be free the child should have a good education during the week so he truly enjoys his Saturday and is a well rounded person, because he should have a good education there should be good schools for him to attend, because there should be good schools for him to attend our society should ensure that good schools and teachers are in place for him. He is the centre, if the other things fail him then they should go.

Do not crush that little poor child, with his cheeky Saturday face and his bruised kneecaps. Do not crush his simple pleasures at beeing free on a Saturday to be a boy. No, the whole state should stop and reconsider, parliament should put all things on hold, the media should be in UPROAR untill that child is guaranteed the freedom to be a boy on a Saturday.

Crush the dammed “think tank”, crush CentreForum, crush the schools, crush the state but do not crush the child. Do not take his Saturday away, this child, who might not read and write because he has never been taught to. His life will surely be a hard one today. His adulthood marred by the disadvantage of his youth, but now he is oblivious to this hardness, do not force his head down yet and break him. Leave this child alone to his blyth indifference, as short a time as that may be.

There’s a beautifull poem by Whittier written in 1855 when boys were still allowed, it starts ” Blessings on thee, little man, Barefoot boy, with cheek of tan! With thy turned-up pantaloons, And thy merry whistled tunes….” Its a far cry from todays beleaguered children but it still rings true, we still see them, now and then, in glimpses, those “barefoot boys”, resilient and bold, but still just children. Do not punish them because they are poor, rather love them more because of it.
